ABOUT   OUR   NAME

What Does the Name "Alethia" Mean?

"Alethia" is a modified English transliteration of the Greek word,  aletheia,  meaning "truth."

The name does not imply that we think "truth" is something we possess and dispense, but instead is that for which we strive. Pursuit of truth is the core value of The Alethia Foundation.

We are aware that the term "truth" is largely discarded in philosophical circles, from linguistic analysis to anthropological relativism to deconstructionism. We also are well aware that it carries, with good reason, the old imperialist-dogmatic alarm for many people.

Appreciating these problems, The Alethia Foundation nevertheless takes a stand on the philosophical and moral sovereignty of the ideal of truth and on the usability of the term "truth."

The Alethia Foundation is moreover dedicated to truth-seeking as not merely propositional but as ultimately also relational, that is, intersubjective. In the conviction that where we in some way encounter truth there we also in some way meet with Christ, lies the freedom to explore any question.

A certain festive, unrestrained curiosity, accompanied by relentless critical examination, characterizes this ideal of truth-seeking.

But it has its roots in spiritually wakeful lives, saturated with prayer.

Such truth-seeking demands self-discipline, humility and constant commerce with the checks and balances found in the wider human community. At any point in history, whatever we know, or think we know, is in frail and fallible human hands. We pursue truth, therefore, in grateful companionship with many who do not share our particular allegiance or convictions.

The ideal of truth sufficiently transcends the human quest for it that we do well to be in honorable, fruitful exchange with those who have a different understanding of it.
