.  .  .   WHAT,    EXACTLY,    IS  SHIFTING,

IN    THIS    PARADIGM ?

I.    THE   NAME   OF   THE   GAME

The Alethia Foundation sees the prevailing paradigm cracking at several points. Many of these changes are linked by a shift in moral values about power.   With a view toward a Christian vision of a new paradigm, our description of the shift is centered on this theme of power. In method and content, this theme is a motif of the work of The Alethia Foundation.

The Alethia Foundation believes that the person and work of Jesus Christ overturns worldly ideals of power, which are ultimately illusionary. In the person and work of Christ we see what true power looks like.

The WORLD sees POWER as                            CHRIST  reveals POWER as

limited and contested; attained and kept only through competition

multiplied, not diminished, by cooperation and mutual support

naturally pyramidal and unilaterally hierarchical in authority structure

communal, with reciprocal accountability, complementarity of gifts & expertise

decreased when shared

increased when shared

manifested in coercion and "objectivizing"

manifested in capacity for sustaining relationship & connection

equated with conquest, domination and destructive capabilities

equated with actualization of constructive potential

idealized in the gamesmanship that controls the workplace and political arena

idealized in structures that are geared to enable others accomplish something rather than to defeat them

subjugation: the ability to subdue and control others, to diminish their power

liberation: the ability to empower and nurture others

threatened by differences (race, gender, culture) and uses them to divide and rank

strengthened by differences; sees diversity as a resource rather than a threat

requiring "either/or" thinking

requiring "manifold" or "both/and" thinking

motivated by fear and guilt

motivated by joy and hope

achieving autonomy

achieving mutuality; in the ecclesial language: communion

Part of what characterizes the present paradigm shift in the secular world is a movement away from the "worldly" idea of power and toward the "Christly" model.

Of course, other versions, both religious and secular, of the "empowerment" interpretation of power are in circulation, and commend themselves to us on many grounds. The Alethia Foundation advocates this ideal of power on its faith grounds as a matter of Christian formation, of conforming to Christ.

Following are four theaters of change which suggest the scope of this transformation of perspective, which is characterized as "paradigm shift". In each of these four broad areas we find many developments that open doors to new ways of thinking.

The direction of these changes is favorable to a restatement of Christian faith, and to a renewed respect for Christian doctrinal claims and their basis for ethics. The Alethia Foundation believes such emerging themes found in these four areas of change can be connected to each other within a classical,  Trinitarian Christian framework that harmonizes a coherent and livable scientific, spiritual and moral worldview.
